21st Century Educators

Objectives:

21st Century Educators is a collection of programs and qualifications designed to help prepare educators for working in the modern knowledge economy.   The traditional practices and learning methods in education no longer provide the students with all the skills and competences they need.  The industrial model of education based on knowledge transfer, of one-to many, one-way messaging, individual performances and memorizing facts has given way to networked expertise, team play, initiative and finding creative solutions to complex problems. Finding and memorizing information is no longer a challenge – on the contrary, there seems to be too much data available. The key is digital and media literacy. Moreover, the role of technology has become central in all areas of society.  This new environment requires new pedagogy and new roles for the teacher: from the deliverer of information to facilitator or coach – both face-to-face and virtually. In this environment it is no wonder teachers may feel overwhelmed. Teacher development frequently focuses on how to use new technology rather than the pedagogical reasons for adoption and use. The 21st Century Educators programs have been created to meet these needs.  It is a unique, innovative and tested approach to pedagogical competence building, where the focus is on 21st century skills acquisition. This is integrated in all aspects of the training: learning environments, teaching and learning methods, collaboration and networking as well as assessment. These programs offer concrete tools to support teachers’ professional growth in the rapidly changing world, and guide their journey to become “21st Century Educators”. The programs are divided into fully facilitated online modules which use authentic e-learning and progressive inquiry as their pedagogical framework, and engage participants using a range of online and social media tools.   The overriding theme through all programs is the development of reflective educators and an examination of the educators professional identity and beliefs about learning.

Content (Three modules with 10 ECTS each)

Teaching and Learning in the 21st Century

In this module the participants will investigate learning theories and their practical application and gain an understanding of how people learn. They will reflect on their own practical theory of teaching and examine the characteristics of 21st century society and what this means for their learners and context. Explore the acquisition of 21st century skills and the implementation of authentic learning tasks.

Educational Technology

In this module participants will find and test new technologies that support learning and gain an understanding of the pedagogical foundations for successful and efficient use of these technologies. They will also learn to facilitate online collaboration in different learning environments and apply authentic learning tasks to their own context. They will learn how to develop and promote digital literacy and explore the use of social media in education.

Learning Outcomes and Assessment

In this module participants will reflect upon the purpose of assessment and the appropriateness of different types of assessment for different levels and types of learning. They will consider the role assessment should play in the learning process and the value of peer and self-assessment. Participants will consider the assessment of 21st century skills and how to use evaluation and feedback to support learning outcomes.

Method

The course is conducted fully online. The language of instruction is usually English. The course includes:

  • live lessons in the virtual classroom
  • self-learning material
  • interactive group work
  • customized and evaluated exercises

Requirements

  • Participants should be active school or university teachers.
  • Participants need to be able to read and understand English on an academic level. Should you require instructions, exercises and discussions to be held in a different language, please contact us.
  • Attending the course requires a high-speed internet connection, a headset and ideally a webcam.

Certificate:

The 21st Century Educators Postgraduate Certificate is a three module program worth a total of 30 ECTS credits (1 ECTS = 25 – 30 hours of studying).  This innovative fully online program offers concrete tools to support teachers’ professional growth in the rapidly changing world, and guide their journey to become “21st Century Educators”.

Duration:

The Postgraduate Certificate is normally studied over three semesters, allowing participants to pilot and implement their learning into their own classrooms using the progressive inquiry framework.

The program is provided by the Tampere University of Applied Sciences (TAMK).
